Wainwright’s Yard
Front Entrance Design Scheme

Wainwright’s Yard is located off the main shopping high street in Kendal, with access via a double entrance passageway. This makes it difficult for visitors to see the food, drink, and retail offer. Negatively impacting potential footfall and customers. The front entrance had become tired, over-cluttered and uninviting.

Our solution

All existing signage, metalwork and clutter were stripped out.

I designed a series of colourful frames containing digital screens to promote the yard, it’s tenants and local community events, artificial living wall and information graphics.

The scheme features, new slate paving with programmable coloured LED lighting, LED downlighters to fill the passageways with light, a front entrance sign that features a light beacon to draw people’s eye, along with new seating to encourage people to dwell and spend more time in the yard.

The digital screens and lighting are all remotely managed to allow updating of content on a regular and seasonal basis. The lighting can be programmed to be different colours and sequences, which is prefect to tie in with Christmas lights and other times throughout the year.

“Matthew immediately understood the brief and came up with a solution that included new branding, signage, lighting, paving, and colourful frames with plants, signage and digital screens. The screens can be regularly updated with information to promote the yard, the retailers and wider community events. It all works very well and catches people attention from the high street, drawing them through two narrow, conjoined historic tunnels.”

“Matthew managed the project from start to finish, working with the planners to gain consent, creating and sourcing all the elements and arranging for the installation. The Yard looks much smarter and it is more welcoming and has been well received given reactions on social media.”
